What AppAtlas does
AppAtlas creates a local inventory of applications and supported installer files, displays storage information, finds identical installer files using SHA-256, and provides user-confirmed actions such as opening, revealing in Finder, organizing metadata, or moving eligible items to Trash.
Scanning locations
- Applications, System Applications, user Applications, and Downloads are included when macOS permits access.
- Desktop and other folders require explicit selection through the macOS folder picker.
- If a folder is unavailable or does not respond, AppAtlas skips it for that scan and displays a Scan Notice instead of blocking the entire scan.
Authorize Desktop or another folder
- Open Privacy & Settings.
- Choose Authorize Desktop… or Add Scan Folder….
- Select the exact folder in the macOS panel and confirm.
- Run Scan Again.
If a scan appears slow
- Check the progress banner for the item currently being measured.
- Large applications can contain tens of thousands of files and require additional time for accurate size calculation.
- Select Stop to cancel. AppAtlas restores the previous completed index rather than replacing it with partial results.
- Review Scan Notices for folders that were denied, unreadable, damaged, or temporarily unresponsive.
Installer results and duplicate detection
AppAtlas recognizes DMG, PKG, MPKG, XIP, ZIP, and structurally valid application bundles. A folder merely ending in .app is not accepted unless it contains a usable application property list. Duplicate savings are reported only for installer files with identical SHA-256 hashes.
Moving an item to Trash
AppAtlas shows the exact target and requests confirmation before moving an eligible item to the macOS Trash. System applications remain read-only. AppAtlas never automatically empties the Trash. Some locations require you to authorize the containing folder before the operation can continue.
Reset the local index
Open Privacy & Settings → Delete Scan Index. This clears AppAtlas's local applications, installers, tags, notes, and scan history without deleting external applications or installer files. You can run a new scan afterward.
